Indian government bans 59 Chinese apps

On 19th June Indian Intelligence agencies issued a list of Chinese apps that should be banned for data security of Indian users. Yesterday Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology took the decision to ban 59 Chinese apps.The list includes apps popular apps like TikTok, UC Browser, CamScanner Shein, Clash of Kings, and a handful of Mi apps. TikTok has over 200 million users in India and has been involved in a lot of controversies in India recently. The list primarily consists of TikTok like video sharing apps, camera apps with various beauty filters and some utility apps including scanners, browsers, battery savers and cache cleaners.The Ministry of Information Technology, stated section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009. These apps were said to be engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, the security of the state and public order.
